A proper 3D background for your Exo Terra – not another foam insert
If you have ever watched a cricket vanish behind a loose background, found claw marks in soft foam, or felt that the original panel looked a little too artificial, you will know why the background matters.
Aqua Maniac’s 3D backgrounds for Exo Terra terrariums are made from tough poly-resin and shaped to turn a plain glass wall into a natural-looking rock feature. They are hard to scratch, water-resistant and heat-resistant, so you get a more substantial backdrop designed for real terrarium conditions — not a lightweight polystyrene panel that soon looks tired.
Each background is handcrafted and hand-painted in small batches. The result is a premium feature that gives the enclosure genuine depth and texture while keeping the practical details right for everyday reptile keeping.
Why reptile keepers choose Aqua Maniac
Tough poly-resin instead of soft foam
The standard Exo Terra background is made from polystyrene. Aqua Maniac backgrounds use hard-wearing poly-resin, giving your reptile a firmer, hard-to-scratch surface that is better suited to regular climbing and exploring.
They are not claimed to be indestructible, but they are made for keepers who want something more substantial than a basic foam insert.

No inviting gap for escaped crickets
Soft backgrounds and rear channels can create exactly the sort of dark hiding place feeder insects love. Aqua Maniac’s background is flat on the back, so it sits neatly against the rear glass.
Choose the correct size for your Exo Terra and seal the edges with terrarium-safe silicone. Once properly installed, there is no open cavity behind the panel for crickets or other feeder insects to disappear into. That means fewer frustrating searches and fewer insects left hidden in the enclosure.
More habitat, not simply decoration
The sculpted rock texture adds visual depth and gives climbing reptiles a grippier surface to explore. It can make a bearded dragon setup feel less bare, add structure to a lizard or gecko enclosure, create a natural-looking backdrop for snakes, and bring more character to suitable frog and amphibian habitats.
Every species has different husbandry requirements, so always arrange heating, lighting, humidity and usable space around the animal you keep.
Water-resistant and heat-resistant
Poly-resin is well suited to the changing conditions found inside a terrarium. The background is water-resistant and heat-resistant, helping it cope with normal misting, humidity and basking temperatures without the vulnerable feel of exposed foam.
Heat-resistant does not mean fireproof. Do not allow heaters, heat mats, lamps or other high-temperature equipment to touch the background; always follow the equipment manufacturer’s clearance and thermostat guidance.
Made for your Exo Terra model
There is no need to guess at a generic panel size. Select your Exo Terra model and receive the corresponding background size for its rear wall, from the compact Nano Wide to the Large X-Tall.
Before ordering, check the model name and measure the usable internal rear area of your terrarium, particularly if it has been modified or contains fixed equipment.
Choose the depth and finish that suit your setup
Amazon Design – approximately 4–6 cm thick A richly detailed forest-floor design combining broad tree-root and bark forms with embedded stones, broken-rock textures and shadowed crevices. Deep, uneven relief gives it a convincing sense of age and depth, while earthy browns, charcoal shadows and muted stone highlights suit woodland, jungle and naturalistic displays. Choose Amazon when you want the background to become a bold visual feature and have enough enclosure depth for its more pronounced profile.
3D Thin Rock Grey – approximately 2 cm thick A space-saving, horizontally layered rock face inspired by weathered strata and broken stone ledges. The cool grey colourway is designed for neutral, mountain-rock and contemporary naturalistic layouts. It adds visible texture without taking as much room from the enclosure as a deeper design.
3D Thin Rock Beige – approximately 2 cm thick The same slim, layered-rock formation in warm sand, taupe and muted brown tones, with darker recessed joints bringing out the stacked-stone effect. It works particularly well in desert-inspired, scrubland and warm neutral setups while preserving more usable floor space.
The stated thickness is the approximate maximum profile of each sculpted design. Surface relief and hand-painted colouration naturally vary across the panel, so every finished background will have its own small differences.

Simple silicone installation
- Empty the terrarium and clean and dry the rear glass.
- Dry-fit the background and confirm its position before applying silicone.
- Apply a suitable terrarium-safe or aquarium-safe silicone in accordance with the silicone manufacturer’s instructions.
- Press the flat back into position and seal the perimeter so feeder insects cannot access the space behind it.
- Allow the silicone to cure fully and air the enclosure before returning any animal, substrate or décor.

Care and safe use
- Wipe with a soft cloth or soft brush and reptile-safe cleaning products.
- Avoid abrasive pads and metal tools that could mark the hand-painted finish.
- Keep all heating equipment at the safe distance specified by its manufacturer.
- Check the silicone seal periodically, especially in enclosures using live feeder insects.
- Confirm that the chosen depth leaves enough usable space for your animal and furnishings.

Frequently asked questions
Will crickets get behind the background?
The panel has a flat back rather than a deliberately hollow rear section. When you choose the correct size, fit it flush to the glass and seal the perimeter properly with terrarium-safe silicone, there is no open route or cavity behind it for feeder insects to use as a hiding place.
Is it suitable for bearded dragons?
The tough, textured poly-resin surface makes it a strong choice for a correctly sized bearded dragon enclosure. Choose the depth carefully so your dragon retains sufficient floor space, and position heating and UVB equipment according to your husbandry plan.
Is it suitable for snakes, lizards, geckos and frogs?
It can be used in many snake, lizard, gecko, frog and amphibian setups, provided the size, design depth, heating and humidity are appropriate for the species. The thin 2 cm options are particularly useful when preserving enclosure space matters.
Is the background scratch-proof?
No terrarium décor should be described as indestructible. Aqua Maniac’s poly-resin surface is hard to scratch and considerably more substantial than exposed foam, but it should still be cleaned and handled with care.
Can it be used with heat lamps and misting systems?
The background is heat-resistant and water-resistant for normal terrarium use. It must not touch a heat source, and all heating, lighting and misting equipment should be installed according to the relevant manufacturer’s guidance.
How do I choose the right size?
Select the exact Exo Terra model from the product options and use the size guide above to confirm the corresponding panel dimensions. Measure the usable internal rear wall before ordering if your terrarium has been modified or contains permanent fittings.
